5 Things to Check in April Before Spring Water Use Ramps Up
April in Utah is when homeowners start turning their attention outside again.

Sprinklers wake up, hose bibs get used, water heaters start working harder, and anything that got beat up over winter finally starts showing its face.
That makes April the perfect month for a quick plumbing and water check before spring water use kicks into high gear. A little attention now can save you from leaks, weak pressure, surprise repairs, and a whole lot of nuisance later.
Here are five things we recommend checking before the season takes off.
1. Check your outdoor faucets and hose bibs
Turn on every outdoor faucet and look for dripping, spraying, weak flow, or water coming from anywhere it shouldn’t.
If a hose bib is leaking behind the wall, that problem can stay hidden until it turns into damage. That’s the kind of surprise nobody needs in April.
2. Test your sprinkler and irrigation system
Run each zone, check for broken heads, soggy spots, dry patches, and strange pressure changes.
In some Utah communities, irrigation systems are only just coming back online around mid-April, so don’t assume everything is ready the very second spring shows up. A slow startup is normal in a lot of places, but leaks, stuck valves, or damaged lines are not.
3. Flush your water heater
Hard water does not exactly make that job easier, either. Sediment and mineral buildup can settle in the tank, reduce efficiency, and make the unit work harder than it should.
If you hear rumbling, popping, or the hot water doesn’t last as long as it used to, that’s a good sign the tank needs attention.
A flush, inspection, and temperature check in spring can help keep it running smoother through the rest of the year.
4. Check your water softener
Check the salt level, look for bridging in the tank, and make sure the system is regenerating on schedule.
If your water feels “off” again, your dishes are spotting, or soap isn’t lathering the way it should, the softener may need service or adjustment.
Utah’s hard water is no joke, and a softener that’s running poorly can let scale start creeping right back into your plumbing.
5. Look at your water quality at the kitchen tap
A reverse osmosis system or point-of-use filter can help improve taste and reduce the stuff homeowners notice every day.
This is also the time to check for filter changes, leaks under the sink, and any slow flow at the RO faucet. If you haven’t had your water tested in a while, April is a smart month to do it.
A Simple Spring Reset
If you want to keep spring from turning into a plumbing problem, start with these five checks.
If something looks questionable, that’s when it pays to bring in a pro before a small issue turns into a wet, expensive mess.
